Abundant Life: Choosing – and sustaining – life

Abundant Life, a non-profit organization in Israel, fights for the protection of a mother and the unborn baby in her womb – and then supports in practical ways mothers who have chosen life.

Just as its name implies, the organization believes in the gift of life. Abundant Life upholds the sanctity of life and identifies with the words in Job 1:21: “The Lord gave (life) and the Lord has taken away (life) – may the name of the Lord be praised.”

The vision of Abundant Life began in 1999 when a young girl with an unwanted pregnancy contacted Anat Brenner for counseling. Following the counseling she received from Anat, the young girl decided to keep her baby instead of having an abortion.

Because of the pregnancy, however, the girl was fired from her job and, when she returned home from the hospital with her newborn baby girl, the landlord ordered her to leave the apartment claiming she failed to pay rent.

Anat, who later established the organization with her husband Ishai, said their hearts broke because when the young girl most needed help, they did not have the necessary tools to help this mother in distress.

This incident sparked their vision to establish a home that would serve pregnant women in need of immediate shelter, protection, counseling and other practical help. In 2004, Ishai and Anat moved into the home and their vision became the reality of their lives.

Abundant Life offers women with unwanted pregnancies a telephone hotline operated 24 hours a day by trained professional counselors around the country.

The organization provides humanitarian aid for women with economic hardships. They help with baby furniture, clothes, diapers, baby food, vouchers and more. This support  continues after birth and, sometimes, for several years.

Abundant Life conducts an information campaign in different cities around the country, distributing leaflets regarding abortions, female trafficking and prostitution.

The organization also holds two seminars. The first provides additional training for its consultants. The second is called “In his image” and deals with post-abortion syndrome. The seminar is designed for women who suffer the effects of trauma after they had an abortion. Studies have indicated that abortion causes trauma and that women who’ve had an abortion suffer the post-traumatic effects. The emotional implications that are expressed after abortion include depression, guilt, self-destruction, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, shame, regret and anger at those involved whether a boyfriend, family member, etc. This seminar is designed to provide emotional and spiritual healing for these women.

Abortion is also known to have physical consequences such as perforation of the uterus, bleeding and infections. There is a risk of 6 to 10 percent infertility and a high percentage of miscarriages in the future.

Studies show that performing an abortion in the first trimester of the pregnancy may double the risk of breast cancer. Joel Brind, professor of human biology and endocrinology at Baruch College, City University of New York, contends that multiple abortions can increase the risk of breast cancer by 3-4 times. Abortion also raises the possible risk of cervical weakness that could cause the fetus to miscarry in advanced stages of pregnancy.

Two years after establishing Abundant Life, God put a burden on the founders’ hearts to help and support women who have been trafficked for prostitution. They established a day center in Tel Aviv called The Red Carpet, where help is offered for women involved in prostitution and drugs.

We have no right to take a life. Our lives belong to God. In Prov. 24:11-12 we are commanded to save those that are “drawn to death.” The creator of life, that created us in his image, commands us in his word to fight for life and not stand by doing nothing when we see a life in danger.

Abundant Life is a unique organization that encourages women to choose life – for their own sake and for their children – and then helps them maintain that precious life.

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”
Deuteronomy 30:19
