Guatemala officially moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Monday.
The Guatemalan flag was raised at the embassy’s new location in Jerusalem on Tuesday after embassy staff officially relocated on Monday. A ceremony for the new embassy is scheduled for May 16th- two days following the United States historic ceremony opening its embassy in Israel’s capital city.
Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Guatemala’s decision and move, writing on Tuesday “I was moved to see the flag of Guatemala waving in Jerusalem in advance of the opening of the Guatemalan embassy later this month. Dear friends, welcome back to our eternal capital!”
The Czech Republic, Honduras, Paraguay and Romania have all announced they will relocate their embassies.
Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues its efforts to bring more embassies to the nation’s capital. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely finished a European tour mid-April where she met with dozens of European officials. During her time in Europe, Romania and the Czech Republic announced they would begin the process for relocating their embassies.
