Israeli drones deliver food in Reykjavík, Iceland

In September 2015 Iceland’s capital city submitted a motion to boycott all products made in Israel. Fortuitously for Reykjavík, that particular bill was not passed, and two years later, that very city is benefiting from an Israeli project that is delivering food to them via drone.

This past week, Flytrex, an Israeli technology company launched in Iceland what they are calling the world’s first commercial food delivery system, based entirely on unmanned aerial vehicles. They have signed an agreement with AHA, an on-demand goods service — the largest online marketplace in Iceland that serves the needs of the Nordic capital.

The talks of a boycott two years ago threatened to put a severe strain on Israel-Iceland relations, but following a general outcry from Israel’s foreign ministry, and a careful rewording of the legislation, a compromise was made and the bill that was passed has allowed for this kind of partnership to occur.

“We feel that the cooperation with Flytrex is going to put us at the forefront of the competition in terms of what we can offer to both our retailers and to our customers,” AHA CEO Maron Kristófersson said at the launch.

The city of Reykjavík in particular is well suited to being serviced by drones because it has many small rivers which make deliveries a challenge for time and ease. Even supermarkets and restaurants make use of AHA’s services.

Flytrex CEO Yariv Bash said that to start off there will be around 20 deliveries per day. Each Chinese-manufactured drone, a modified Matrice 600 models with six propellers, can carry boxes containing orders that weigh up to a few kilograms.

Already, the online trader has experienced a 60 percent reduction in costs due to the Israeli drone system. Land and sea deliveries cost that much more. Another benefit is that the unmanned vehicles are faster and have reduced delivery times by almost 20 minutes at the busiest times of the day.

“Behold, I have made him a witness to the peoples, A leader and commander for the peoples. Behold, you will call a nation you do not know, and a nation which knows you not will run to you, Because of the LORD your God, even the Holy Oneof Israel;
For He has glorified you.”
