Yesterday, November 23, 2015, Ziv Mizrahi, a 19 year-old soldier, was stabbed to death. He was not engaged in combat, rather pulled into a gas station after being involved in a minor road accident. A 16 year-old Palestinian saw Ziv get out of the vehicle and stabbed him in the chest.
Ziv was the 23rd Israeli victim in this wave of violence, and unfortunately the numbers are increasing each day. While there is a story behind every victim, some are particularly unique and touching.
Ziv was laid to rest today, November 24, 2015, at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl. His father spoke of the heroism of his son, sharing that even after his son was stabbed in the chest he had to strength and courage to stop the terrorist and save his commander, who was only lightly wounded. He compared this valor to that of his brother, who was also a victim of a terrorist attack 13 years ago, trying to stop a suicide bomber at the entrance to restaurant.
Despite these family tragedies, Ziv’s father vowed that his spirit would not be broken. After sitting shiva (seven days of mourning in Jewish tradition), he will return to work. How difficult but necessary is it to continue with our lives. Otherwise we allow terror to control us.
May God give us all strength in these trying days. More than ever are we in need of His peace! May we as a people cry out “My help is from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:2) For we can proclaim:
Behold the Guardian of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep…The Lord will guard you from all evil; He will guard your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from now and forever. (Psalm 121:4,7-8)
