Messianic Rabbi Itzhak Shapira, author of The Return of the Kosher Pig, posted a video response to a sermon by Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi that was negative about Christianity and Messianic Jews. This is the same Rabbi Mizrachi who threatened to murder Eitan Bar and Moti Vaknin of One for Israel in a video that Kehila News Israel posted on October 22, 2015.
Rabbi Shapira was born and raised in a traditional Sephardic Jewish home in Israel. After years of studying Rabbinic Jewish texts, he found the Messiah within the Hebrew writings. Now he serves as the founding rabbi of Ahavat Ammi, an international Jewish organization that is focused on reconciliation between Jews and Yeshua.
It’s encouraging to hear a Messianic Rabbi publicly respond to such baseless hate. In the 21 minute video, Rabbi Shapira invited Rabbi Mizrachi to a debate to expose his lies about another Jew, Yeshua in this case. He also questioned Rabbi Mizrachi about whether he holds the same position about “death” for Chabadniks, regarding their belief about the Messiah, or is that position reserved only for Messianic Jews? Rabbi Shapira said: “The true message of the gospel is a Jewish message.” He closed by saying: “Every argument that we can take on for the kingdom of heaven is worthy to have.”
What sort of response will we hear from the Orthodox community? Sure, not all agree with Rabbi Mizrachi’s incitement, but will they denounce it publicly?
