The Israeli company Insightec has developed breakthrough medical technology that enables patients suffering with the brain condition Essential Tremor to undergo a painless MRI guided procedure instead of invasive brain surgery.

This week, a 60-year-old man from Bethlehem was the first Palestinian to receive the treatment in Israel.

A company that has won awards for innovation, Insightec was founded in 1999 by engineers from Israel’s internationally respected Institute of Technology, the Technion. Among Insightec’s ground breaking medical technology is the Exablate platform which enables doctors to treat brain disorders, cancers and uterine problems using non-surgical, high intensity focused ultrasound guided by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

The Palestinian patient was suffering from a severe case of Essential Tremor, a brain dysfunction resulting in uncontrollable shaking in one or more parts of the body. The hands and forearms are the areas most often affected, but the head, face, tongue, neck and torso can also be impacted.

“High intensity focused ultrasound waves precisely target a focal point in the Vim nucleus of the thalamus, the tiny part of the brain that is thought to be responsible for causing tremors,” Insightec explains on its website. “The Exablate Neuro ultrasound transducer consists of 1,024 beams that generate enough heat to ablate the targeted tissue during treatment. The result is an immediate and significant reduction of tremor for patients.”

The patient from Bethlehem received the treatment at the Rambam hospital in Haifa. Rambam was the first hospital in Israel, and one of the first in the world, to carry out this treatment.

The patient, who was fully conscious during the procedure, is now able to go back to work at his restaurant, the Jerusalem Post reported.

do good to them that hate you.”
