Sir Winston Churchill – An example for every believer

This week Josie and I went to see the movie called The Darkest Hour, about the life of British politician Sir Winston Churchill, who was the British prime minister during World War II. The cigar smoking, eloquent, but very gruff speaking politician, was the ultimate expression of the ‘British bulldog.’ He was elected to be the leader of Britain at a time when the title of the movie was absolutely the precise description of the dilemma that the nation was facing. Hitler’s army was rapidly advancing towards the English channel, causing a massive death toll and terrible destruction as the nations of Western Europe fell and surrendered. The German air force was bombing Britain’s major cities and the German navy was sinking hundreds of merchant and allied naval vessels as they attempted to bring supplies to the British military forces fighting in Europe. As Belgium and France fell, more than 300,000 young soldiers of the British army were stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk and Calais, and it looked like most of them would perish, leaving nothing to stop the German army from invading and taking over Britain.

I am sure that most of us are aware that with God’s intervention, the hopeless looking situation was turned to a victory. Low lying clouds came in and gave cover to the armada of 850 British boats that set sail at Churchill’s command to rescue the soldiers and bring them back across the channel to England. Under Churchill’s ‘never give up’ leadership the army reformed and the airforce was strengthened, and 5 years later the German army surrendered and Hitler’s evil regime was totally defeated. Winston Churchill received a knighthood in recognition of his amazing ‘bulldog’ service to king and country.

That all happened more than 70 years ago, but nothing has changed. Even in Churchill’s time the government was full of liberal left wing ‘dreamers’ who thought that it was possible to negotiate a peace treaty with the demon-possessed Hitler. Churchill had to stand against tremendous opposition from most of the other government members, even his own party, most of whom wanted to pursue peace with Hitler. Churchill’s gut feeling was to stand strong and in the face of an impossible looking situation, fight and defeat the enemy. In one of his famous speeches Sir Winston Churchill said “Never, never, never, never, never, never give up!!!”

Israel is in a similar situation today, facing a sea of sworn enemies. PM Netanyahu is facing tremendous pressure at home and internationally to concede to the demand to give the enemies what they want, which would ultimately lead to Israel’s destruction. Please pray that PM Netanyahu will be Israel’s Winston Churchill and that he will never, never, never give up what has been given to Israel and the Jewish people by the Creator of the Universe. And please pray that God will give PM Netanyahu the right strategy to defeat Israel’s enemies.
